Volunteering in Chicago is a great way to give back while also meeting new people. Whether you would like to volunteer once a week or once a month, these three volunteer opportunities in Chicago are a great way to give back to the community:

Museum of Science and Industry

Spanning 400,000 square feet, the Museum of Science and Industry is one of the world’s largest museums of its type. It opened during 1933’s Century of Progress and features exhibits designed to spark scientific creativity. More than 1.5 million people visit each year, making the museum one of Chicago’s most popular attractions.

Every day, the volunteers work to help the museum achieve its mission to inspire the inventive genius in everyone. They come from diverse backgrounds and donate a minimum of forty hours annually. Opportunities include Fab Lab, Science Connection, and Learning Lab.

Shedd Aquarium

When the Shedd opened in 1930, it was unlike any other aquarium on the globe. It was the first inland aquarium with a permanent saltwater fish collection, and for a time, it was the largest attraction of its type. The Shedd strives to spark compassion and curiosity for marine life, and guests can explore on their own or enjoy a private, personalized tour.

Volunteers are found in nearly every area of the aquarium. All adults with a love of learning and teaching are welcome, and there are several opportunities to choose from. Options include guest engagement, water quality laboratory, and research & evaluation.

Red Door Animal Shelter

Established in 1988, the Red Door Animal Shelter is a no-kill rescue that finds loving families for dogs, cats, and rabbits. It provides a cageless environment, giving the animals the closest at-home experience a shelter can provide.

Red Door’s volunteer program offers flexible hours, and anyone 18 and older can participate. Tasks include grooming, fundraising, and transporting animals.
