Chicago has a world-renowned theater scene, and even the theaters themselves are special. The next time you want to take in a performance, don’t miss visiting one of these unique theaters in Chicago:
Lookingglass Theatre Company
Established in 1988, Lookingglass is a leader in the creation and presentation of new, cutting-edge theatrical works. It is located inside the historic Water Works Water Tower. This Gothic revival limestone structure was one of the few buildings to survive the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. In 2011, the company received the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. The Lookingglass strives to leave audiences emotionally engaged as well as empowered.
Theater on the Lake
Built in 1920, Theater on the Lake is a historic Prairie-style building constructed of brick with steel arched pavilions throughout. It seats 330 and offers picturesque views of the lake and skyline. The theater is open year-round and also features the Lakefront Restaurant. Diners enjoy its casual elegance, and in the kitchen, Chef Cleetus prepares seasonal Midwestern fare. Entrees include slow-cooked brisket, chicken fried chicken, and mixed mushroom quinoa risotto.
The Yard at Chicago Shakespeare
The Yard opened in 2017, and its crescent-shaped design consists of several mobile audience towers. It is known as one of most unique theaters in the world and has received recognition from publications such as the Daily Herald and the Chicago Tribune. The theater can seat up to 850, and visitors can expect the unexpected. In fact, the venue is designed to easily change from an intimate cabaret to a dramatic thrust stage with runway aisles
